Tech Sergeant Patrick Shirley and his family is one of five finalists in this year’s “Most Deserving Military Family Contest”, sponsored by the Atlanta Accident Attorneys from Montlick & Associates. Initially launched on Memorial Day, the public was invited to nominate deserving military families by sending in their stories and photographs. The winning family will be determined by the voting public through July 15, 2013 at http://www.wsbtv.com/contests.
The nomination letter explains the devotion that the Shirley family has to keeping things as normal as possible. Tech Sergeant Patrick Shirley, of the 283rd Combat Communications Squadron, may be deployed more seven-thousand miles away in Afghanistan, but that doesn’t keep him from reading a book to his two boys (ages 4 and 9) in Lawrenceville, GA. The work of the soldiers is often mentally and physically exhausting. Tsgt. Shirley does his best to keep morale high among members of his unit in Afghanistan. He developed Shirley’s Shindand Speedway to race remote control cars for entertainment. He also volunteers to teach the Afghanis English. Back home in Lawrenceville, Tsgt. Shirley’s wife, Mandy, leads the Family Readiness Group (FRG), a support organization for military families.
