Fertility awareness-based family planning methods were described by Dr. Jennings as methods “to help women plan or prevent pregnancy by ‘being aware of’ the days when pregnancy is possible.” These methods rely on the fact that there are only a few days each cycle when a woman is fertile. The issue is to determine when these days occur as they can move around from one cycle to the next. Some methods help a woman do this by looking at her individual fertility symptoms such as secretions and temperature. The Standard Days Method works like an ovulation calendar and allows a woman to determine her fertile days in advance by tracking when her period starts.
