American Samoa Works to Counter Widespread Obesity
Vienna, VA (PRWEB) July 09, 2013 -- American Samoa has a serious problem with obesity that is more severe than all 50 states. An article published July 7, 2013 on CBSnews.com by Ben Tracy entitled “Battling American Samoa’s 75-percent obesity rate” discusses the serious obesity problem that American Samoa suffers from. According to the article, the leading airline in American Samoa is Samoa Air, and they decided earlier this year that they would set an example for American Samoans by abandoning their usual practice of charging a specified fare for a flight. Instead, the article says, the airline decided to weigh both passengers and their bags and then charged them a flat $0.50 for each pound that they weigh. The article says that the airline’s profits rose twenty percent after they did this, which shows the seriousness of the problems with obesity in American Samoa.
The article also quotes a Brown University study that came to a disturbing conclusion – that American Samoan babies may in fact be overweight from the moment they are born. The study found that the tendency of excessive weight began in infancy with between 30 and 40 percent of American Samoans overweight by the time that they are 15 months old. According to Dr. John Tuitele, who is quoted in the article “It’s very scary and we need to do something. Fast.”
American Samoa may be an extreme example of the obesity problem that is occurring throughout the United States, but it is important to remember that obesity rates are rising everywhere. If these rates continue to rise, it would not be surprising to see other airlines attempt to charge both passengers and baggage by weight, following the lead of Samoa Air.
