Leading Provider of Security Guards, The Protective Group, Responds to New Law Changing Requirements for Guards in Hawaii
Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) July 12, 2013 -- On July 12, leading security company The Protective Group comments on an article published on BusinessWeek about the recent changes made to the application requirements needed to become a security guard in Hawaii.
According to the July 1st BusinessWeek article titled “Hawaii Security Guards Face New Requirements,” Hawaii’s Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs made a change to the laws dictating the requirements to become a security guard in the state of Hawaii.
The new law requires security guards to have a state-issued card signifying that they are eligible to become an officer. In order to receive the card, the article says “guards must submit an application and meet certain requirements, including eight hours of training and a background check,” before they apply.
Apart from just a background check, there are now education requirements, confirming that applicants have “proof of high school graduation, a GED or any education equivalent,” in order to receive a card. The entire method is a learning process according to the department. There was some confusion in the beginning concerning specific requirements but recently the process has become more streamlined.
The law also states that all current security guards must apply with information to receive a state card. According to 2010 state data, the article says there are about 10,000 active security guards operating in Hawaii and the department has received only about 6,000 applications so far. According to the article, the new law, which took effect on Monday, says all security guards need to at least submit applications in order to be allowed to continue work. Those who did not submit an application by Monday will be technically working illegally.
John Monderine, CEO of The Protective Group, says while all states have different requirements for security guards, he thinks Hawaii’s new law will be effective in solidifying people who are serious about security. “There are a lot of new requirements outlined in Hawaii’s new law, but I think it will be good for the state,” he says. “It will hold all security guards and protective services to a higher standard because they all have to be trained and have a high school diploma. People can’t just walk off the street and become a security guard. It’s a profession that is very physically and mentally taxing. This law helps to make sure that the people who can handle it are certified.”
