Sochi 2014: New Training Center for Paralympic Athletes Opened in Udmurtiya
(PRWEB) July 10, 2013 -- A new Paralympic sport center which will become the main base for the training of Paralympic athletes from Udmurtiya has opened during a ceremony in Izhevsk. The center will focus on sports including sledge hockey, wheelchair curling, cycling, cross-country skiing and biathlon, alpine skiing, speed skating and powerlifting. Sledge hockey players from the "Udmurtiya" team who are part of the Russian Paralympic team will train at the center and compete at the 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi.
The President of the Republic of Udmurtiya, Aleksandr Volkov, members of the Republic of Udmurtiya Government, representatives from the Ministry of Sport and Tourism of the Russian Federation, the Russian Paralympic Committee and sports federations, and well-known athletes and representatives of associations of people with disabilities all participated in the opening ceremony. During the event, players from team "Udmurtiya" held a friendly sledge hockey match and presented the Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi-2014.
The Paralympic Sport Center was created on the base of the "Chekeril" sport complex, which includes several large venues for the active recreation of the residents of Udmurtiya and guests from other regions. The new center includes a 56x26 m ice rink, a 25 m swimming pool with 4 lanes and two gyms.

The Team "Udmurtiya" includes international tournament prize winners and six world champions.
The team was founded in 2009 in Izhevsk and many "Udmurtiya" sledge hockey players are part of the Russian team. "Udmurtiya" was a silver medal winner in the Russian Championships in 2009 and 2011, and a Champion of Russia in 2010.
In 2013, the Russian team won bronze at the World Sledge Hockey Championship. The "Udmurtiya" club was represented by field players Ivan Kuznetsov, Aleksei Lysov, Evgeniy Petrov, Ruslan Tuchin, coach Aleksandr Larionov and technical coach Ilgam Avzalov.
In 2011, "Udmurtiya" became a participant in the "Sochi 2014" Our Champion project in the Volga Federal District.
