Inedo Updates ProGet Their NuGet Package Repository with a Major Release, ProGet 2.1, which Introduces License Filtering
Berea, OH (PRWEB) July 11, 2013 -- Inedo, creators of BuildMaster and ProGet, has introduced important new functionality to ProGet, a free NuGet package repository.
ProGet is a NuGet server that enables NuGet usage in enterprise environments. It addresses this by adding features such as authentication, multiple feeds, access controls, API/SDK extensibility, and auditing.
ProGet 2.1 makes several changes, but most notable is the addition of License Filtering. This feature protects developers against hidden licensing issues.
Alex Papadimoulis, Founder and President of Inedo has a bit to say on pitfalls of unexpected licensing, “The way NuGet functions it makes it incredibly easy for a developer to bind his employer to a license agreement: just install the package. It’s one of those little mistakes that can happen very easily, but have unfortunately large consequences.”
Many open source licenses have binding agreements that are agreed to implicitly by installing the package. This leads to organizations agreeing to undesirable terms without even realizing it. With ProGet 2.1, License Filtering allows you to set up a profile so that only licensing terms your organization accepts is permitted in the feed.
“It’s a tricky situation.” Alex explains, “Unexpected Licensing is a caveat of most software, in fact, virtually all packages on NuGet are copyrighted works that are licensed for use; they’re not public domain works. Even if these licenses are not read, they’re still a legally-binding agreement between the licensee and the licenser, and that agreement can contain some unexpected terms.”
This is the most important change to ProGet, for more information you can refer to the release notes..
ProGet is available to be licensed free, or at cost with added features.
