SPARC to Host Hackathon 3D: Its Third Annual Mobile Application Development Competition
Charleston, SC (PRWEB) July 11, 2013 -- SPARC has opened registration for its third annual mobile application hackathon being held on August 23-24, 2013.
Hackathon 3D will bring together teams of developers from around the country to compete for thousands of dollars in prizes and giveaways, provide an energy-filled environment for spectators, and feature all the beer, caffeine, and tasty food trucks feasts attendees can handle. The two-day event will be held at SPARC’s headquarters on 2387 Clements Ferry Road in Charleston, SC.
Hackathon 3D gives software engineers a chance to show off their mobile app skills in an engaging and creative setting where all hands are completely on deck. Prizes will be awarded to teams who build the best applications. Networking opportunities, vendor presentations, gaming, music, and other fun events and challenges keep the party going for everyone present. The engaging nature of the competition, coupled with SPARC’s award-winning culture, produces a can’t-miss event for engineers - or spectators, who are also welcome at the event.
Participants of Hackathon 3D will work in teams of one to three people, and use their own equipment to develop applications based on a chosen concept or category. Teams can develop native apps for Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Windows Phone 7, or use a framework such as PhoneGap that builds to an APK or IPA. Demos will be given at the event on SPARC equipment, and all code will be checked into SPARC’s Github repository then released under a GPLv2 license after the Hackathon.
"We implement and contribute to a ton of open source technologies here at SPARC, but we also like to open-up our culture and invite the industry in to collaborate. Hackathon is an excellent opportunity to celebrate tech and bring together the area’s talent in a fun and creative way," - said Eric Bowman, CEO, SPARC.
The new two-day format of Hackathon 3D will give teams more time to develop and deploy their apps, while giving the audience a better showcase at the end of the event. In true Hackathon fashion, the doors will be locked to the public at 9:00 p.m. on Friday to give engineers a chance to focus on app development, beer drinking, and collaboration. When the doors re-open at 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning, the mad rush to deploy will begin and spectators will return to see the presentations and awards.
“We really upped the ante this year with the overnight format,” explained Sally Kingston, Hackathon 3D coordinator. “With the dedicated development time, I’m sure we are going to see some killer apps presented on Saturday afternoon. And of course, we’ll have plenty of caffeine and fuel to make sure everyone’s eyelids are still open too!”
Check-in and setup will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 23., during which time idea revelation will occur. Application development and deployment will take place from 9:00 p.m. on Friday to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The public will be “locked out” of SPARC from 9:00 p.m. on Friday until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, giving teams ample private time to focus on their app. From 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., teams will officially build and deploy apps and judging will begin at 2:00 p.m. After the top ten apps are chosen, spectators and participants will have time to use the apps before they are presented to everyone starting at 5:00 p.m. After seeing demonstrations of the top ten apps, the awards ceremony will begin at 6:00 p.m.
