The couple, owners of Caring Transitions of Upstate South Carolina, were awarded the “Trailblazer of the Year” award for their commitment in helping to develop the Caring Transitions Online (CTO) Auction site, helping to refine the process, assisting others by developing and training the CTO model and making recommendations for software. The award was presented at Caring Transitions’ national conference in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., amid more than two days of informational sessions, networking opportunities and roundtable meetings.
“We had no idea we would win, but it’s a wonderful thing,” Rick said, with Janet echoing his sentiment.
The Parkinson’s career path originated from personal experience -- in 2007 the Chicago natives moved to South Carolina to help care for Janet’s aging parents, leaving behind successful careers in the healthcare industry. They had heard about Caring Transitions before their move south and were intrigued. The more they researched, the better the franchise fit with their professional background and their experience in trying to secure help for Janet’s parents. In 2008, the couple launched their franchise, aiming to assist people who are transitioning from one phase of life to another, be it divorce or the death of a parent.
Initially the Parkinsons’ mainstay was brick-and-mortar estate sales, but that meant an unsold, leftover inventory. They eventually turned to wholly Internet-based estate sales and the effects were immediate. “From the beginning, it was successful. We sold every bit of it and our clients’ loved it,” Rick said. Within three years, their online followers swelled from 900 subscribers to more than 12,000.
“Our business is now focused on selling everything on the Internet. What we do is very labor intensive, and we couldn’t do it without our staff. We have people who work with us who are very dedicated,” Janet said, noting they employ a staff of four full-time employees, three part-time hires and one seasonal full-time employee.
“To me, the concept of Caring Transitions makes so much sense, you can’t miss,” Rick said.
