Mercy College Dean of the School of Education Releases New Book “Magnificent Mistakes in Mathematics”
Dobbs Ferry, NY (PRWEB) July 13, 2013 -- For anyone who has had difficulty in Math, Mercy College Dean of the School of Education and professor of mathematics education, Alfred S. Posamentier, has co-authored a book with Ingmar Lehmann, entitled, “Magnificent Mistakes in Mathematics.” The book begins with a chronicle of the mathematicians and some of the remarkable mistakes they have made in math. From Pythagoras to Aristotle to Archimedes to Newton and Leibniz, the book both entertains and informs on the magnificent mistakes that have been made over time, and the unusually, and sometimes entertaining results those mistakes have led to. The book serves as an excellent window into understanding and appreciating math better.
Posamentier says, “This book is for the general audience, both those who love math and those who haven’t been given the opportunity to love it yet, to help them realize that mistakes in mathematics give a keener insight into the field.”
Dr. Gerhard Ackermann, professor and retired president, Beuth University of Applied Sciences in Berlin, Germany, says, “The authors ask readers to follow them into mathematical areas such as the number pi, the Pythagorean theorem, or other concepts and look for ‘magnificent mistakes.’...It’s a brilliant and entertaining technique for understanding math and the development of theorems.”
Posamentier has published over fifty books, including The Pythagorean Theorem: The Story of Its Power and Beauty; Math Charmers: Tantalizing Tidbits for the Mind; and (with Ingmar Lehmann) The Glorious Golden Ratio; Mathematical Amazements and Surprises; The Fabulous Fibonacci Numbers; and Pi: A Biography of the World’s Most Mysterious Number.
