Architect Luis Vidal Discussed Airport Design, Current Projects Heathrow Terminal 2a and Front Range Spaceport at AIA Conference, San Francisco and Dallas Talks
(PRWEB) July 13, 2013 -- Spanish architect and aviation expert Luis Vidal gave presentations on his recent work to full houses at architecture groups in Denver, San Francisco and Dallas. The talks included reflections about energy needs and world population, leading into a discussion about his airport terminal work, case studies on his design philosophy, and the current Terminal 2a project at London’s Heathrow airport for which Vidal is the concept and lead architect. The presentations also offered a peek at the future of space travel in regard to his current work as Associate Architect to the engineering and architecture firm HDR for the design of Front Range Spaceport in Denver.
Vidal was the Keynote Speaker for the annual meeting of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in Denver. Scheduled to coincide with the annual convention of the American Institute of Architects, he presented “Scale, Energy and Travel Architecture: recent work of Luis Vidal + Architects.” Following his time in Denver, Vidal, who had been invited by HDR and the San Francisco chapter of the American Institute of Architects, gave a talk in San Francisco on June 24, after which he traveled to Texas where he presented “Scale, Energy, Sustainability and Responsibility: the work of Luis Vidal + Architects” on June 27 in conjunction with the Dallas Architecture Forum and the Meadows Museum. In addition to information on his airport terminal work, this presentation included a discussion of the three disciplines his practice develops: urbanism, architecture and industrial design.
“It is always invigorating to meet fellow architects on my visits to the United States and I feel honored and proud to have been invited to present my body of work and our firm’s work philosophy to these professional groups,” Vidal stated.
All three presentations included an in-depth look into Heathrow Terminal 2a, for which Vidal’s Madrid-based firm has developed a 21st century airport that is human and environmentally responsible. This project draws from Vidal’s expertise and experience in the design of other terminals and hubs including Terminal 4 of Madrid’s Barajas airport as well as the Zaragoza Airport, also in Spain. Compared to other hubs of similar type and scale, Heathrow Terminal 2a reduces CO2 emissions by 40% through the application of active and passive energy systems, and the unique design of the roof allows important flow of natural daylight, while reducing solar gain and contributing to saving energy. Terminal 2a will open its doors as its first flight arrives from Chicago’s O’Hare Airport on June 4, 2014; the terminal will serve 20 million passengers a year.
