Meals On Wheels Is Struggling and You Can Help
Walnut Creek, CA (PRWEB) July 13, 2013 -- Rocked by $100,000 funding cuts by government sequestration for the coming fiscal year, Meals on Wheels is still providing the much needed services by seniors. The need to fill 10 open routes is immediate so the program can continue to provide the delivery of hot, nutritious meals. “We are the safety net for so many of clients,” says Sharon Fitzgerald, Program Manager for Meals on Wheels serving Central Contra Costa County and East County to the border of Oakley.
“The program is so much more than meals,” says Fitzgerald. The volunteer drivers, in just a few minutes a day provide a bit of companionship to home bound seniors as well as a safety check. To many seniors the volunteer drivers are as important as the meals they are receiving. For only 2 hours a week volunteer drivers make a tremendous difference in the lives of the seniors. As Mary, 86, says, “The volunteer drivers and the meals they deliver are my lifeline.”
The volunteer opportunity is one day a week (Monday through Friday) from 10:30am-12:30pm. Please call Sharon Fitzgerald at 925-937-8607 today.
