Heroic Houston Woman With a Tragic Life History; E-Retailer Offers Hope to Rebuild
Houston, Texas (PRWEB) July 18, 2013 -- When Tana Johnson was 11 years old, her mother's boyfriend came into their house and shot her mother in the chest, killing her. Tana and her siblings went to live with their grandmother, but when her grandmother struggled, Tana stepped up, dropping out of school at age 13 to look after her younger siblings. Tana later went on to build a family of her own and started a career as a school bus driver. But when a close friend's crack addicted sister had twins, Tana stepped up again. She left her job as a bus driver and adopted the children, raising them as her own. Despite some medical issues related to their mother's drug usage, both children today are on the honor roll today.
But tragedy was not done visiting Tana's life. Another bullet took her brother's life and a drunk driver her sister's. Her husband Frank suffers from a heart condition that has left him on a respirator and unable to work. And in 2008, Hurricane Ike brought a tree down upon their house in Houston's Third Ward, smashing their roof.
"They've had a lot of tragedy in that family...but she's a fighter," says Pastor John Riles, who works with families in Houston's Third Ward. "She's got a big heart."
Now after five years of leaking and mold, repair for their roof may finally begin due to a new initiative from a cabinet hardware website.
"Normally, when a hurricane damages a roof, I would expect basic repairs to be made within a few months," explains CabinetHardware.org founder David Mason. "Yet, here it is five years after Hurricane Ike, and the Johnson's still live with a cooler on top of their china cabinet to catch the rain. Tana has given so much to others, we thought it was time we gave back to her and her family."
Cabinethardware.org is turning the traditional business model on its head by merging the crowdfunding concept with its successful e-commerce lines. This means that anyone who shops on its site can designate 10 percent of their total purchase to a featured project. The project must receive 100 or more votes to qualify for assistance.
“We are a home improvement site, so it’s only natural that the way we give back is to help those in need improve their homes. By shopping on our site, you can renovate your own home and at the same time help others at no additional cost to you,” Mason continues. “We believe in doing good for others while you’re doing good for yourself.”
