College Freshmen: Your Career Starts with Day One on Campus, Says Career Skills Expert Alfred Poor [infographic]
Perkasie, PA (PRWEB) July 16, 2013 -- When the new crop of freshmen start arriving at colleges all across the country, many of them will be thinking about how they will make a living after they graduate. The fact is that their careers start with the first day that they set foot on campus. The skills and attitudes that they develop in college will have a major impact on how attractive they will be to potential employers after graduation and how successful they will be in their jobs.
Career skills expert and author Alfred Poor has created an infographic that shows college freshmen how important it is to think about the “soft” career skills that employers want but find lacking in recent college graduates. He focuses on three skill areas and gives tips that students can put to use right from the very first day of college.
For example, one of the three areas is “Show up on time.” This may seem simple, but studies show that the number one reason that young employees lose their jobs is for poor attendance. Many colleges do not penalize students for being late to a class, or for even missing one altogether. If students work to be at every class before it starts, ready to work, they will build habits that will set them apart from the other recent graduates who are competing for the same jobs. In addition, they will likely get better grades and be more successful in college if they make attendance a top priority.
More and more colleges are making an effort to get career skills information to their students as early as possible. The information and advice in the infographic is part of the message that Alfred Poor shares with college freshman audiences, as part of their orientation programs or in support of career skills training in their first year.
