Online Divorce Findings Show Women Cheat More, But Not as Much as Men
Aliso Viejo, CA (PRWEB) July 15, 2013 -- Online divorce service MyDivorcePapers.com (MDP) reviewed fresh divorce statistics for the month of June, and their findings have determined that income can be a causal factor in why more women are cheating today than they were 20 years ago. However, in spite of the significant increase among females, it’s worth noting that men still cheat the most.
The Infidelity Numbers: A Breakdown
Bloomberg Businessweek recently reported on a study conducted by the National Opinion Research Center’s General Social Survey and discovered that while just 14.7 percent of women admitted to being unfaithful in their marriages, that number was a 40 percent increase from where it was more than 20 years ago in a 1990 study.

Pepper Schwartz, a University of Washington sociologist, speculated that more women may feel free to cheat because the economic consequences aren't as dire as they were when more women stayed at home.
“They can afford the potential consequences of an affair, with higher incomes and more job prospects,” Schwartz said. “They have more economic independence and may meet a better class of mate.”
Income Inequality
While Schwartz’s theory in no way means that women are earning more money than men altogether -- as of 2010, women still earned only 80 cents to every dollar of a man -- MDP’s statistical findings suggest that Schwartz is on to something by blaming the increase in female infidelity on an increase in financial independence.
For the reported cases in June, MDP found that close to two-thirds of divorces were initiated by women, and that women filing for divorce, on average earned approximately $47,000 annually compared to $38,000 for men.
The takeaway: more women are filing for a divorce, and income inequality that actually favors the female appears to play a key part in the decision.
As for the Men
With more men financially dependent on their wives than existed in 1990, one would be reasonable to expect a decrease in the number, who cheat. However, men are actually cheating at the same rate as before -- approximately 21 percent -- and that number outpaces the ladies by around 38 percent.
