Gambita Revolutionizes Shopping for Petite Women

The site, founded by petite CEO Caroline Misan Alvo, is carefully curated and includes pieces from several designers that are made for those small in stature. Gambita literally means “little shrimp” in Spanish.
Misan Alvo was initially inspired to start Gambita because of her own struggles with shopping. “I’m 4’9” and shopping has always been a nightmare for me,” explains Misan Alvo. “I figured that my shopping issues were due to the fact that I was exceptionally short, but I realized after many conversations with other petites that this was a much bigger problem.”
Misan Alvo went on to explain that petite women make up half of the female population in the United States, yet lack a retailer exclusively focused on this segment. “It’s so surprising to me that there are Big & Tall and Plus-Size retailers, yet petites lack a store that fully caters to their needs.”
Misan Alvo does acknowledge that there are petite options in a handful of major retailers, but emphasizes that these selections are very limited compared to their normal offerings and are still often not truly made right for the petite woman. “You can’t just chop off a few inches on a pair of pants,” Misan Alvo passionately describes. “It’s all about proportion! Items designed for taller women sometimes just don’t work for shorter women, even with the help of a good tailor.”
Gambita sells a range of clothes, including denim, dresses and tops. There is a strong emphasis on color, prints and fashion-forward options because Misan Alvo believes that this is what is particularly lacking in the market today. Clothing sizes are geared towards smaller sizes (XS-M) with the exception of denim, which is available in all sizes. As the company continues to grow, they plan to offer a full size range on all items.
Misan Alvo wants to create the ultimate shopping destination for petites, where they are able to find all their clothing needs, from work to casual to formal wear. “I want my fellow Gambitas to fall in love with shopping, but more importantly, I want them to own and love their smallness.”
