The Global Body Armor and Personal Protection Market 2013–2023
Rockville, MD (PRWEB) July 23, 2013 -- The Global Body Armor and Personal Protection Market 2013–2023
The US military is developing new body armor for female troops to provide them with increased protection on the battlefield. The new outfit is tailored specifically for the female form and consists of more curves in the chest and hips, shorter torsos, and narrower shoulders. The improvements to the existing armor follow concerns about the gear being raised by female soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division, which was deployed to war in 2009.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Frank Lozano, a female body armor developer, the old suit rubbed on the hips, and the vests were too long in the front, which would result in the creation of pressure points that in some instances would impact blood flow and cause some discomfort, thereby making it difficult for women soldiers to properly aim their weapons and enter or exit vehicles. The US Army adopted various solutions to rectify these problems including shortening the vest, re-cutting the arm holes, adding fabric to improve arm and shoulder movement, and making the vest ride closer to the neck. In addition, custom adjustment straps were added to help fit the wearer. These improvements, in addition to allowing for a more comfortable fit, also allow women soldiers to hold their weapons closer to their bodies. Another improvement was to put in additional folds of cloth, such as is found in women’s blouses, to give the vest a more three-dimensional form for a firmer fit.

One of the major areas of emphasis for armies across the world is reducing the weight of body armor and other personal protection equipment used by their troops in combat. Scientists are continuously looking at new materials and composites that offer enhanced protection with less weight. For example, the US Marine Corps is fielding a new helmet that offers 6% more fragmentation protection and the ability to stop 9 mm rounds, which weighs 3 pounds and is about a half-pound lighter than the previous Kevlar helmet being used by the army.
Furthermore, the new Interceptor body-armor system, which was widely used by soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq, consists of lightweight boron-carbide protective plates, making it weigh a little more than 16 pounds, compared to 25 pounds for the previously used flak jacket. The US Army is funding research to get this weight down to under 10 pounds in the near future.
Another area of research that is helping armies to reduce body armor weight is nanotechnology. The Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies (ISN), established at MIT in 2002, is currently in the second of two five-year contracts with the US Army Research Office. It is in the process of developing a battle suit as thin as spandex and containing health monitors and communications equipment.
