5 Tips for Lighting and Decorating Small Spaces
Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) July 17, 2013 -- Whether it’s a first home, downtown loft, or college dorm, everyone lives in small spaces at one time or another. They’re plentiful, affordable, increasingly environmentally friendly and, when decorated right, stylish. To get the most out of your dwelling, California-based EuroStyleLighting.com announces five tips for lighting and decorating small spaces.
“The benefit of living in a small space in a city or town is obvious the minute you walk outside the front door to discover walkable neighborhoods, accessible public transit, and proximity to cultural and entertainment centers,” explains Cori Magee, Design Expert with Euro Style Lighting. “But living inside a tight space shouldn’t feel like a sacrifice. With some careful space planning and these ideas, it’s possible to live expansively in a petite footprint.”
1. Choose Space Saving Lighting
In little rooms, surface area is a premium. Magee explains: “Large lamp bases take up too much valuable table or shelf space. Use stylish modern sconces or a clamp-on lamp instead.” Clamp-on bases affix easily to the edges of shelves, tables or even bed head boards. For added versatility, swing arm wall lights handle the duties of a sconce but can be adjusted to provide light where it is needed.
“For a small apartment, décor and lighting can be stylish even as it remains relatively unobtrusive,” continues Magee. Modern flush mount ceiling lights offer great overhead light without taking up any living space at all. Because they install flush against the ceiling, these designs keep headspace clutter-free too. Pendant lights are a good overhead light for specific locations such as the bed or kitchenette. Crystal pendant lighting can add a luxurious touch to even the smallest room.
2. Use Multitasking Tables
C tables are excellent for little rooms. They’re so named because they’re open shaped, like the letter “C”, allowing them to tuck around couches, chairs or beds when not in use. A decidedly modern style that’s typically made-up of low profile materials like steel and glass, these tables have little visual impact to help keep a space looking clutter-free. “Keep them in the bedroom. The c table doubles as a bed stand, desk, dining table and TV stand,” explains Magee.
3. Opt for Stackables
“If you must have extra tables or chairs on hand, make sure you can stack them,” says Magee. Nesting tables can be nested into one another to save space, or spread out across the living room when tables are needed. Modern stackable dining chairs offer a dual solution of giving your dining area an updated look, but take up the footprint of only one chair when stacked and not in use.
4. Storage Everywhere
“When space is at a premium, get clever with your storage,” says Magee. Storage ottomans are the ideal multi-tasker. They can triple as seats, storage bins, and serving trays or tables. “Not to mention,” continues Magee, “they’re made to kick your feet up on after a long day of work.” Modular shelves are a relatively new design that can also be helpful in small spaces. Fashioned from different sized modules and able to be assembled in varying configurations, they can be customized to best fit a person’s room and storage needs.
5.Bigger is Better
Lastly, smaller furniture and décor doesn’t help a room appear larger. A few regular-sized pieces of furniture or a single over-sized design can be very effective in a small room. “Utilize the entire space you have available,” explains Magee. ”Tall bookshelves and wall art draw the eye up and down, effectively ‘stretching’ the room. Oversized chairs can also give a small room a big presence.” When decorating small spaces, smart design is the key to style.
