Landscape Forms Hosts Campus Planning Roundtable
(PRWEB) July 16, 2013 -- Twelve leading design professionals recently met to discuss current issues and approaches in college campus planning and design. The group included architects and landscape architects representing seven major academic institutions and five firms doing important work in the field. The meeting, held at Arizona State University in Phoenix, was co-hosted by Landscape Forms President Richard Heriford and ASU Landscape Architect/Faculty Associate Byron Sampson, who also served as moderator.
Participants were asked to consider five key issues driving current campus master planning and design: Sustainability, Preservation, Growth, Technology and Collaborative Learning. ASU’s Byron Sampson stated, "The dynamic of the campus is changing. At ASU, we are doing things that allow students to engage on the campus in a different and meaningful way."
According to Landscape Forms President Richard Heriford, "With the continual challenge to attract students to their campuses, colleges increasingly face the need to innovate in their space planning. Getting together to share ideas on how to create and maintain a sense of place that functions effectively and attracts the desirable student is important to their successful efforts."
Luanne Greene, Principal, Director, Campus Planning Studio, of Ayers Saint Gross Architects, Baltimore, MD, says, "In the design and planning process you engage and educate people. One of the points of higher education is to prepare future leaders, so teasing through these tough battles when budgets are tight can say something to young people."
Landscape Forms hosts groups annually with experts in the fields of design, architecture and landscape design addressing current issues and ideas for the future. Previous roundtables have centered on the topics of Multidisciplinary Process, the Landscape Architecture Profession and Technology and the Landscape. "The annual roundtables enable us to bring together the best and the brightest to share ideas and insights in a collaborative atmosphere. We are pleased to have the opportunity to host these groups of professionals," says Heriford.
