Check my IP address service added to idcloak homepage
Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) July 17, 2013 -- idcloak have added a simple check my IP service to their homepage which allows internet users to identify the public IP address they exhibit when accessing sites and services online.
When matched to other information, like a browser fingerprint, IP addresses can be used by third-parties to identify and track users online without any special data access privileges. Following the recent NSA surveillance controversy, we now know that many Internet Service Providers make their logs available to government agencies.
The main services provided by idcloak are proxies, which mask user IP addresses. It is primarily for their existing user-base that the check my IP service is intended, but not only.
“When you use a proxy to change your IP address, a quick visit to our site will show that you are as anonymous as your proxy promised,” says Robin Welles, idcloak’s senior internet researcher. “But we display this data for newcomers to our site as well. We want to remind visitors that they hand over IP data to every site they visit. The internet beguiles everyday users into thinking their movements go unnoticed; advertisers, cybercriminals and governments are profiting from our ignorance.”
Alongside the displayed IP address, any visitor to idcloak also sees a country flag denoting the registered location of their IP address. If users wish to see what other data their connection reveals, idcloak offers an anonymity test page which displays information such as the user’s browser type and version, language settings and whether they are seen to be using a proxy.
idcloak is currently working on a more advanced version of the anonymity test page which will also display information revealed through javascript if it is enabled in a user’s browser.
