Sierra Nevada Noir Full Moon Photo Workshop with Helen K. Garber
Venice, CA (PRWEB) July 17, 2013 -- Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles, CA is presenting Sierra Nevada Noir, a very special workshop for photographing the full moon in some of the most exciting western film locations in the Eastern Sierra Mountains. The workshop, led by Helen K. Garber, internationally renowned night photographer, will infuse landscape photography with a film noir sensibility.
Set during this year's full Harvest Moon, the shooting workshop will begin at moonrise in the Alabama Hills on September 17 and then continue very early the next morning when the moon sets over Mount Whitney in Lone Pine, CA. The group will then move three hours north to Bridgeport, CA and later Bodie State Historic Park (the most complete ghost town in California).
The highlight of the trip will be the night shoot under the full moon at the ghost town. The park normally closes at sundown and will stay open especially for the participants of this workshop. After a preliminary discussion and a tour with a ranger, Ms. Garber will guide the group on how to give a Noir spin to shooting the moonlit building remains.
To further manifest the noir sensibility to the photo adventure, two film noir classics will be screened while on location. John Huston’s High Sierra (Warner Bros., 1941), shot on location in the Alabama Hills will be screened at the Lone Pine Film History Museum when the group arrives in the afternoon of Sept. 17 and Out of the Past (RKO Radio Pictures) starring Robert Mitchum will be screened in Bridgeport, CA, where it was shot in 1947.
There will be an orientation meeting on September 10 at Otis College of Art & Design in Los Angeles, but with permission from the instructor, one can take the shooting workshop without attending the class meetings.
Route 395, the road that runs along the Eastern Sierras, is Ms Garber's favorite road trip in California. Along with the Alabama Hills and Bodie, there are many other wonderful shooting locations along the way. Ms Garber encourages the participants to extend their photo adventure independently and add daytime stopovers to the Bristlecone Pine Forest (oldest living trees on Earth, Mono Lake, Manzanar (remains of the WWII Japanese Internment Camp) and take connecting roads that lead to Death Valley and the Pinnacles National Monuments. One can also return to Los Angeles via the magnificent Tioga Pass that cuts through Yosemite and ride south along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range.
There will be a final meeting at Otis for a critique of the participant’s work. Cost includes tuition, admission fees, night entry to the California State Park, room for two nights, and one meal; transportation is not included.
Participants are expected to understand how to use their camera, including ISO, speed, and aperture settings. Digital cameras are recommended but film cameras are acceptable for the shoot, with 400 or 3200 ISO. Ms Garber also encourages professional photographers to sign up for the workshop, as it is a very special event to be allowed to shoot at Bodie Historic Park, something not available without obtaining an expensive permit.
The first class meets at Otis for orientation on Tuesday, September 10. The travel dates are Tuesday, September 17 – Thursday, September 19 with a follow-up critique on Tuesday, September 24. The course fee $875.00. The course registration number is 25372.
