Mercy College Alumna to Address Students at Mercy College’s Disaster Preparedness Camp
Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. (PRWEB) July 18, 2013 -- Mercy College alumna Virginia Ross, who graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, will be returning to the Dobbs Ferry campus on August 8, 2013 to speak to students participating in the Title V Step Up to STEM summer program. Ross, who owns the business http://www.catastrophereadiness.com, specializes in how to prepare families for a disaster. Ross is pleased to give back to Mercy College by sharing her knowledge about disaster preparedness with students.
Ross says, “My goal is to educate everyone on the importance of taking a pro-active approach and being self-reliant for whatever may come your way. As an Emergency responder for The Red Cross, I have seen firsthand the perils of not being prepared. Research has proven that people who are mentally prepared are much more likely to survive a disaster and will recover from it more quickly.”
The Title V Step Up to STEM summer program is an innovative way to engage students by demonstrating the relevance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields in real-life scenarios. Mercy College’s Title V STEM Grant Project Coordinator, Carolina Hernandez, says “We are excited to have Virginia demonstrate first-hand the relevance that STEM fields, particularly Psychology, play in disaster preparedness. It’s wonderful that she is a Mercy College graduate since a large part of the program is to expose to students to professional STEM role models and I can’t think of anyone better than a successful Mercy College STEM alumna.”
The camp is open to high school seniors, college freshmen and sophomores, and students pursuing STEM majors, including psychology. The program is free of charge.
This innovative program has been developed by both Mercy College and Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) faculty, notably: Michael Rivera (Science), Narasim Banavara (Technology), Alberto Manzi (Psychology), Marion Ben-Jacob (Mathematics) and Yana Durmysheva. This program is supervised by Mercy College School of Education, Dean Alfred S. Posamentier.
