Beachy Waves: How to Get Summer’s Hottest Hair

The coveted, naturally sexy style is meant to appear like someone’s spent all day playing in the surf, then let their hair dry into gorgeous waves aided by a sea breeze. Unfortunately achieving this beautiful look is more effort than a day at the beach.

• If your hair is naturally curly or wavy: Women with a natural curl or wave are in luck, because beachy waves can be super-easy to create. Here’s how: wash hair at night, then let it air dry until it’s just slightly damp. Run a texturizing product (like Aveda Volumizing Tonic) through hair then divide hair into sections and braid. How many sections depends on how long and thick a person’s tresses are. When all the braiding’s finished, twist the braids up into buns on top of the head and sleep on them. By morning, hair should be dry. Take the braids out, give the waves a good run-through with fingers, and finish off with a smoothing spray or serum to keep hair shiny. Voila!
Alternate option for faster results: After the hair is twisted up into buns, take a blow dryer with a diffuser attachment and use it to make sure the braids are dry before taking them down.
• If your hair is straight or fine: Yes, even if hair is naturally pin straight, beachy waves can still be achieved. It just takes a few more tools, but not much more time. Here’s the secret weapon: a flat iron. Curling irons can make hair appear a little too structured for the beachy waves style, but flat irons can be used to make looser curls while still having the same high heat to make straight hair behave and hold a soft wave. Here’s how: Wash hair and apply a texturizing product. Make sure hair is completely dry (a blow dryer is the fastest way, though air drying works, too). Piece hair into several different sections, then take a flat iron and, starting from the highest point a person wants the curl to begin, turn the hair around the iron. If hair is long, this might have to be done in two different sections for a single “piece” of hair. After have been curled around the iron, run fingers through it, use a little shine serum (for fine hair, we like Dove Hair Therapy Nourishing Oil Care Anti-Frizz Serum), and that’s it.
• Don’t be discouraged. Even though beachy waves are supposed to be ridiculously simple, for some women they aren’t – and it does take some time and experimentation to see which method works best. Smaller braids work well for some people, while large, loose braids are better for others. With practice, it will soon be a simple solution to a bad hair day that only takes minutes to achieve.
• More recommended products: First: do not use hair sprays or styling products with too much hold as they will make hair look hard instead of soft. Most importantly, never use products with salt in them. There are a ton of “surf/ocean/sea” products on the market, all promising that the salt they contain will make hair look like it’s dried naturally after a dip in the ocean. Saltwater is never good for any hair type as salt is drying and coarse on hair, causing curly hair to separate, feel even drier than usual and become frizzy. Instead, consider a texturizing product like Bumble and bumble’s Bb. Texture Crème ($28), which is good for all hair types and doesn’t contain sodium.
