Minneapolis Criminal Defense Attorney Kevin W. DeVore Weighs in on Increase in Serious Crimes in Minnesota
(PRWEB) July 18, 2013 -- For years, the crime rate in Minnesota and throughout the country was falling steadily. Now, in 2012 the state saw a slight increase in serious crimes, according to The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) 2012 Uniform Crime Report. Lawyers at DeVore Law understand that violent crime rates are on an upswing, not only in Minnesota, but across the country reported KARE 11 (7.8.13).
The most recent numbers available from the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics show violent crime in the U.S. rose close to 15 percent between 2010 and 2011. In comparison, Minnesota showed a 3.4 percent increase in violent crimes from 2011 to 2012, said the Minnesota report.
“The increase in crime numbers is certainly something that law enforcement has noted,” said Minneapolis criminal defense attorney Kevin W. DeVore “However, It’s not necessarily cause for tremendous alarm.”
To put the numbers in context, the U.S. has had violent crime rates fall nearly 65%, from nearly 17 million in 1993 to nearly 6 million in 2011.
Overall in Minnesota, murder increased 26 percent from 2011 to 2012, while rapes were down in number from 2012. Robbery continued to decline and aggravated assault saw a small increase after falling steadily over the past several years, according to the 2012 Uniform Crime Report.
Attorneys at DeVore Law understand that crime statistics can increase the fear and anxiety of the public. This can then be linked with public pressure for solutions to crime problems, including more policing and more punitive responses to crime. The more crime rises, the more money is typically given to the criminal justice system.
A person who is arrested for a crime, especially a serious one, should contact an experienced lawyer as soon as possible.
