Turning Self In Was Right Call for Hit and Run Driver
(PRWEB) July 19, 2013 -- Police have arrested a man for the a lethal hit-and-run accident. The motorist responsible turned himself in Monday, a move that his friends told him was the right thing to do – and one that Minneapolis criminal defense attorney Kevin DeVore says will ultimately improve his odds in court.
Jessica Hanson, 24, was bicycling home from work one night last week when she was struck by a car with no lights on. The vehicle fled the scene and authorities have been looking for the driver since. Hanson passed away from her injuries according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune (7.8.13)
DeVore is a certified MSBA Criminal Law Specialist and the founder of the DeVore Law Office. As a defense lawyer, he says that running from the law is never a good idea.
“There's no way he would have gotten away with it,” DeVore said. “His friends and family knew, and there was damage to his car that had to be fixed. It was only a matter of time until someone tipped off the police.”
Police say the man was speeding with his lights off and ran a stop sign. Surrendering himself will likely result in a lighter sentence, according to DeVore.
“He was reckless and he has to pay for what he did,” DeVore said. “But now he's cooperating with police and taking responsibility. He has shown he has a conscience. He'll be offered a lesser sentence if he pleads guilty.”
Hanson's family has stated that she was an organ donor and several of her organs have now given a new life to others.
