Charity Golf Tournament Raises $186,800 for Bold, New Cancer Research Studies
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (PRWEB) July 18, 2013 -- Golf enthusiasts and executives from the information technology industry teed up for charity on July 15 for a cause that will bring potentially life-saving cancer care to patients who need it most. The Cures Ahead Golf Invitational was held at the highly regarded Glen Club in Glenview, Illinois, in which the sold-out event raised an impressive $186,800 to benefit The Gateway for Cancer ResearchSM.
The annual Cures Ahead Golf Invitational is put on by The Gateway for Cancer Research in partnership with Cancer Treatment Centers of America® as well as the IT innovation company AHEAD®. Karen Kay, who serves as the director of development for The Gateway for Cancer Research, attributes the success of this event to the unique partnership formed between Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) and AHEAD.
“When CTCA and AHEAD approached Gateway with the idea of an annual charity golf event in early 2012, we had no idea it would take off so quickly,” said Kay. “Both CTCA and AHEAD are actively involved in the planning and promotion of our charity golf event, helping to create a fun and meaningful experience for the golfers.”
The collaboration between Gateway, CTCA and AHEAD produced a sold-out event with 144 golfers representing more than 30 companies turning out in support of Gateway’s mission. The single-day tournament included on-course activities and competitions, as well as an evening program with dinner, awards and an eye-catching silent auction. All funds raised at the event will directly fund innovative cancer clinical trials that explore new ways for helping today’s cancer patients feel better, live longer or be cured.
“We are incredibly thankful for the support and generosity of all our sponsors and golfers,” added Kay. “The money raised will help Gateway to partner with leading cancer researchers who are equally as passionate about discovering potentially life-saving treatments that bring cures to patients in this generation.”
In its 22 year history, Gateway has funded more than 100 phase I and phase II clinical trials at world-renowned research institutions across the country and abroad. The research studies funded by Gateway are for all types of cancers and, most importantly, centered on the needs of today’s cancer patients.
Chad Eckes, chief strategy officer for Cancer Treatment Centers of America, says that Gateway is a truly unique cancer charity poised to make a real difference.
“For Gateway, it’s not only about funding interesting research studies, but also about impacting lives and giving hope to patients who may have very few treatment options,” Eckes explained. “I admire Gateway for holding researchers accountable for producing results and demonstrating progress. What’s more, Gateway ensures the overall health and comfort of enrolled patients are closely measured and monitored, with no exceptions.”
Having a vision to one day see a world in which a cancer diagnosis is no longer feared, Gateway is committed to funding bold, new ideas and next generation therapies. Gateway’s belief that innovation will bring forth better treatments and cures is why executives at AHEAD are enthusiastic about Gateway.
“It’s encouraging to see a nonprofit like Gateway take the lead in fostering change within the cancer research field,” said Daniel Adamany, founder and chief executive officer of AHEAD. “A true measure of progress is when outside-the-box thinking and new technologies impact the lives of those living with cancer.”
Research studies currently funded by Gateway include DNA vaccines to combat breast cancer, nano-technology enhanced curcumin for advanced malignancy, combination therapy for advanced lung cancer, and personalized cancer therapy for Lymphoma and Myeloma.
CuresAhead Golf Invitational premier sponsors include AHEAD, Cancer Treatment Centers of America, CDW, Cisco, EMC, Insight, International Capital and Management Company, LANDesk, Prime Logic Partners, and VMWARE.
