MomDoc Cautions Pregnant Mothers about Taking Migraine Drugs
(PRWEB) July 18, 2013 -- Some migraine medicines on the market today have exhibited potential to lower a child's IQ scores when exposed in the womb. A study, done by the Neurodevelopment Effects of Antiepileptic Drugs (NEAD), showed that children exposed to these particular migraine drugs have IQ scores that are eight to eleven points lower, at age six, than other children. Valproate sodium and related drugs are the root causes of this defect.
Sheetal Kale, MD, of Drs. Goodman and Partridge OB/GYN, commented on the drug stating “Sodium valproate has always been known to cause birth defects like neural tube defects if used around conception of a fetus.”
In addition to MomDoc, and other healthcare centers, the FDA has sent out a warning about the migraine drugs. In fact, they are currently changing the drug’s labels to reflect the danger, for pregnant women, of using it.
Drs. Goodman and Partridge, OB/GYN are apart of the MomDoc network of healthcare facilities and clinics in the State of Arizona. They provide excellent patient care, and have many experienced and professional staff. For more information visit http://momdoc.com.
