According to the BBC on July 16, the water company Severn Trent Water has issued warnings to their customers not to water their garden at night.
Severn Trent Water, who supplies water to 7.7 million people, has issued the warnings after some properties in the Midlands experienced low water pressure. According to the BBC, the water company has found that leaving a hosepipe or sprinkler running can use up to 1000 litres of water per hour – more water than a family of four would, on average, use in one day.
Last week, approximately 3000 homes and businesses in Telford experienced low water pressure and loss of water for over eight hours, while the weekend of July 13 saw an additional 350 million litres of water used by the company’s customers due to the warm weather.
A spokesperson for Severn Trent Water, Marcus O’Kane, told the BBC that the company’s reservoirs should be left to refill during the night to ensure that sufficient supplies of water are available for customers in the morning. He added that:
“Because some customers are leaving hosepipes or sprinklers running overnight, some of our customers are seeing lower pressure than normal.”
We Fix Now, who are renowned for their Walthamstow plumbers, have responded to this news by offering advice to customers on how to reduce their water use:
“Leaving a sprinkler or hosepipe running at night can seem an ideal method of watering your garden, but it can cause significant amounts of water to be wasted. Using a watering can instead of a hosepipe helps to reduce water use. It can be common for outside taps to leak and so, to help save water, these taps should be checked regularly for leaks. If you believe you have a leak, contact a reliable and qualified plumber, such as the ones provided by We Fix Now, immediately.”
