Report: Binge Drinking Can Cause Older Adults to Lose Sleep
Miami, Florida (PRWEB) July 19, 2013 -- As reported by ScienceDaily on 6/10 in their news article titled, "Frequent Binge Drinking Is Associated With Insomnia Symptoms in Older Adults", a new research study published in the online journal SLEEP, found that frequent binge drinking may cause insomnia in older adults. The results spoke for themselves. It was revealed that if a study participant binged on an average of more than two days a week, he or she had an 84% greater chance of reporting an insomnia symptom compared to non-binge drinkers.
Those who feel they are experiencing a problem with alcohol abuse should seek qualified medical help by contacting a certified detox center such as Harbor Village. At Harbor Village, a premier drug and alcohol and detox facility located in beautiful Miami, Florida, clients can check in anonymously and receive private alcohol treatment tailored specifically to their needs. Each client enjoys a very comfortable stay in a state-of-the-art environment. Accommodations include an attractively furnished suite, 30,000 square foot outdoor lounge area, spa, salon, massage and acupuncture services, Netflix and Internet access, healthy, gourmet dining and personalized care from the attentive staff.
According to the news story, Frequent Binge Drinking Is Associated With Insomnia Symptoms in Older Adults, the research included 4,970 adults ages 55 and older who told the researchers they had consumed alcohol. The study's participants reported the number of days on which they had "four or more drinks on one occasion" in the past three months.
During the study, the participants found they had difficulties falling and staying asleep and felt unrested and groggy in the morning. If these symptoms were reported "most of the time" the participants were considered to have an insomnia issue.
"Clinicians and health care providers should be aware of and discuss the use of alcohol with their older patients, particularly those who report poor sleep. Binge drinking behaviors may be an appropriate target for improving poor sleep,” said lead author Sarah Canham, PhD, postdoctoral fellow in Drug Dependence Epidemiology, John Hopkins University, Bloomberg School of Public Health, Department of Mental Health in Baltimore, Md.
“Without proper care and treatment from a certified detox facility, alcohol abuse can evolve into a serious dependency. Receive the care you need and get on the path to recovery,” said Robert Niznik, Harbor Village CEO.
