New Mexico To Receive Key Grant Money
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) July 18, 2013 -- The Federal Savings Bank has been informing its veteran clients that a few organizations in New Mexico are slated to receive federal grant money that will help prevent homelessness among veterans.
The Cibola Beacon reported three nonprofit organizations will receive a total of $1.9 million in grant money. Senator Tom Udall, a Democrat from New Mexico and a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, announced the awards on July 12.
"Homelessness among veterans is a serious problem that we must solve, and I am pleased to see funding go to these great partners on the ground who are working to help our veterans throughout our state," Udall said. "It's especially important to ensure services are in place as more of our military men and women come home to New Mexico from serving overseas, and I won't stop pushing to ensure the federal government is doing everything it can to help provide access to housing, employment and other essential services in their communities after defending our country around the world."

Udall added that the money will finance a number of services, including rent and utility assistance. Even some transportation and child care costs will be covered. The programs are specifically aimed at providing assistance to New Mexico veterans who are in danger of losing their homes or are homeless, according to The Associated Press.
As reported by Las Cruces Sun News, the Mesilla Valley Community of Hope in Dona Ana County will receive $114,369. The New Mexico Veterans Integration Centers that serve more than eight counties received $779,242. The largest of the grant awards, of nearly $1 million, will be given to Goodwill Industries of New Mexico. Veterans and their families in more than 26 counties, including some tribal lands, will benefit from the additional funds.
The Deming Headlight reported the grant money from the Department of Veterans Affairs will serve close to 1,300 homeless and at-risk veteran families.
"With these grants, we are strengthening our partnership with community nonprofits across the country to provide veterans and their families with hope, a home, and a future," said Eric Shinseki, the Secretary of the VA. "The work of Supportive Services for Veteran Families program grantees has already helped us prevent and end homelessness among tens of thousands of homeless veterans and their families, but as long as a single veteran lives on our streets, we have work to do."
