South Florida Summer Experiencing Heavy Rains and Flooding
(PRWEB) July 22, 2013 -- It’s official, summer has begun in South Florida! High temperatures, possible hurricanes, and severe flooding have already become a theme this summer in south Florida. The National Weather Service has been issuing numerous flood advisories since May, and they keep on coming. Miami private security company, Bryant Security is showing south Floridians how to stay safe during this wet and slippery summer season.
“It’s been flood after flood here in South Florida” says Shay Ben-David, President of Bryant Security. “A lot of neighborhoods and main roads are severely flooded, and it’s causing dangerous situations for drivers and home owners.” The National Weather Service has also warned Floridians about strong rip currents, due to persistent easterly winds. “It is never save to swim in the ocean during storms, the lightening and rip currents alone are enough to cause alarm.” mentions Rene Zerquera, Operations Manager at Bryant Security. The relentless rain on all areas between Palm Beach and Miami-Dade this year will likely make July the fourth month in a row with above-average rainfall. The last time this happened was in 1997, according to the South Florida Water Management District. Bryant Security is issuing safety tips during a flooding summer season.
Driving in severe weather conditions can be risky, here some tips to keep in mind:
-In bad weather, consider whether your drive is necessary (can it wait?)
-Check both local and national forecasts, and stay up to date on traffic news
-Consider your route. Keep in mind that some types of roads are particularly dangerous in certain conditions. For example, some roads are more susceptible to flooding and strong side winds than others.
-Check your tires. The tread depth should be at least 1.6mm across 75% of the tire, and the tread should be visible. Tires should be inflated to the pressure recommended by the manufacturer.
-Check lights and wipers to ensure they are working fully
-Clean windscreens, windows and mirrors
-Plan your journey - try to stick to major routes, give yourself plenty of time and allow for possible hold-ups
-Car emergency kit - Make one! Ensure your vehicle is properly stocked. It should contain cloths, warning triangle, torch, blanket and warm clothes, food and drink, a first-aid kit and a map.
Keep these facts in mind:
-Flash floods can come quickly and unexpectedly. You may not have warning that a flash flood is approaching.
-Do not drive through flooded areas. If you see a flooded-out road ahead, turn around. Find another route to your destination.
-If there is no other route, get to higher ground and wait for the waters to subside.
-Even if the water appears shallow enough to cross, don't try it. Water hides dips in the road. Worse yet, there may be no road at all under the water.
-If your car stalls, abandon it immediately and climb to higher ground
-Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control or possible stalling.
