Empire Construction & Development Corp. Releases Increase in Hurricane Activity in the United States Infographic
Sunrise, FL (PRWEB) July 19, 2013 -- Empire Construction & Development Corp, owner of HurricaneShuttersFlorida.com, a leader in the hurricane shutter and security shutter industry, has released a new infographic on the overall recent increase in hurricane activity in the United States.
Here are the important statistics from the infographic:
- From 1990~ 2012, an average of 10 tropical cyclones reached tropical storm strength each year. Of those 10 tropical storms, an average of 6 became hurricanes, and of those hurricanes, 2 actually struck the U.S. coast.
- 1983~2012, 66 hurricanes struck the US coast. (Sandy is not defined yet.)
Among these 66 hurricanes, 28 of them occurred in the last ten years. (42.42%)
- On average, 1.91 hurricanes affect the US coast every year.
Avg. Max Wind Speed: ~98 MPH
- The 20 highest recorded hurricane wind speeds happened in the last 20 years. (From 1983 to 2012), 9 of these happened in the last ten years.
- The path of Atlantic hurricanes threats an estimated 36.2 million people.
The path of Atlantic hurricanes stretches from North Carolina to Texas.
Approximately 12% of the nation’s population lived in these areas in 2009.
- Since 1878, about six to seven hurricanes have formed in the North Atlantic every year.
Roughly 2 per year make landfall in the US. All three curves have been smoothed using a five-year average, plotted at the middle year. The most recent average (2007-2011) is plotted at 2009.
- According to the Total Annual Accumulated Cyclone Energy Index, Cyclone intensity has risen noticeably over the past 20 years. 6 of the 10 most active years have occurred since the mid-1990s. Relatively high levels of cyclone activity were also seen during the 1950s-1960s.
- 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season (June 1 - November 30)
10 hurricanes:
2 major hurricanes : Issac, Sandy (Most of the damage was done)
19 tropical storms
19 tropical cyclones
- This season tied 2011, 2010, 1995, 1887 for the 3rd most active season in history.
Total damage was estimated at $76.8 billion and 322 people were killed.
- Every year, hurricanes account for an average of 60 injuries and 17 deaths in the US.
To put these numbers in context, they constitute only 0.05% of the 2,367,000 deaths that occurred each year in the US, averaged over 1993-2006. Thus, hurricanes contribute, on average, about 0.006% to total US mortality.
- Hurricane deaths and death rates declined by 82% and 05%, respectively. These estimates use data from the National Hurricane Center(NHC) provided in Blake et al. (2007) which has 1,525 deaths for 2005, the year of Katrina.
