Wheeling High School Selects Nanoscience Instruments’ Nanoscience Classroom for New Nanotechnology Program
Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) July 23, 2013 -- Nanoscience Instruments announced today the installation of the Nanoscience Classroom at Wheeling High School in Wheeling, IL, a suburb of Chicago. The Nanoscience Classroom is a modular package of instrumentation configured for nanotechnology education. Wheeling received several scanning electron microscopes, atomic force microscopes, scanning tunneling microscopes and a 3D optical microscope.
This powerful collection of instrumentation allows students to see structures from millimeters to nanometers in dimension. Applications vary greatly and include pharmaceuticals, materials research, energy, aerospace, textiles, forensics, and many more. Students will be exposed to a great number of characterization techniques that can be used immediately after high school in jobs at high technology companies, as critical training for technical college preparation, or as a primer to a higher level college career.

The cornerstones of the Nanoscience Classroom are the Phenom desktop SEM, the Nanosurf NaioAFM & NaioSTM, and the Zeta 3D optical microscope. These instruments are all unique in their compactness, ease of use, and low maintenance. Nanoscience Instruments provides educational material, training, and support and will be working with Wheeling High school to further develop a comprehensive curriculum.
The Phenom SEMs provide magnification to 45,000x. Additionally, students can investigate the elemental composition of materials as well as see them in great detail. The Phenoms will be instrumental in bridging the visible world with the nanoscale world.
The Nanosurf AFM and STM are the eyes into the nanoscale world. The AFM has the ability to probe smaller dimensions, and in true 3D. AFM is required to evaluate smaller and smaller devices and surface structures that are continually being created for new technologies. The STM can reveal actual atomic structure. Visualizing atoms using quantum mechanics provides a truly unique experience for a student.
The Zeta 3D optical profiler is an industrial instrument that provides stunning 3D images in true color. Measurements are made on mechanical devices to look at holes, scratches, steps, roughness, and other important parameters. Students can evaluate micromachined parts, conduct failure analysis, inspect surface finishes, and perform many other tasks associated with 21st century manufacturing.
Furthermore, Laz Lopez, Associate Superintendent at THS district 214 adds, "This NANO Lab will support the school's Research and Development Career Pathway, providing marketable research skills, further integrate engineering and manufacturing with the sciences, and serve students and staff throughout the region, well beyond the school, with professional development experiences. Wheeling High School is a public, four-year comprehensive high school with a STEM focus (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) that opened in 1964 and graduated its first class in 1966. Wheeling is one of the six schools in Township High School District 214, including Buffalo Grove, John Hersey (Arlington Heights), Prospect, and Rolling Meadows High Schools. Wheeling is a culturally diverse high school, as is District 214.
