Porn-block will force modest Brits to anonymous VPN services, predicts idcloak
Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) July 24, 2013 -- With David Cameron’s announcement that every household in the UK will be required to actively opt-in for pornography on their internet connection, idcloak’s Robin Welles predicts anonymous internet services will soon become the country's primary conduit for adult material.
The benefits in terms of sales, however, may be outweighed by the long-term cost to the industry's reputation.
“Over the next 18 months, any British adult who wishes to access pornography online will have to actively request it from their internet service provider (ISP).
There's going to be an enormous tranche of people who want continued access but won't want to admit to it – not to their ISPs, not to their partners, not to their flatmates or their guests. After the block rolls out, anyone sharing a home’s WiFi connection will clearly see pornography has not been filtered out, which can only mean the owner of the connection actively requested to keep it.”
Welles believes shame will drive many modest Brits towards anonymous services, “The only way they will be able to access adult material discretely is through a VPN: a network of international servers which they can use to anonymously visit the sites they choose. They will nobly announce to their ISP that they don’t want pornography, only to discretely go off and get it themselves.”
Asked whether idcloak are pleased that their service may soon be associated with pornography in the UK, Welles was ambivalent, “It’s true the new British legislation will mean a lot more business for us, but in the long term we’re concerned it may take its toll on the wider image of VPN technology. VPNs offer many important services, such as privacy from government surveillance, protection from hackers and circumvention of political censors. We are hoping that the deluge of porn-motivated customers ultimately appreciate the better sides of VPN application.”
