Animal Support Joins Paw Project in Goal to Ban Feline Declawing
Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) July 24, 2013 -- Animal Support and its co-founders Julian Omidi, his brother Dr. Michael Omidi, and longtime friend Maria Abaca recently announced their support of the Paw Project, an organization working to end the practice of feline declawing and to educate the public about this form of mutilation.
People who own cats may think that the declawing procedure is a small, quick cosmetic fix that prevents the cat from scratching furniture. They are not aware that declawing involves the amputation of the last joint of the paw including the bone. Animal Support fully endorses the Paw Project’s effort to eliminate this awful practice and as long as veterinarians continue to perform this painful procedure.
Many veterinarians actually recommend this practice and charge pet owners more than $1,000 per hour. The Paw Project is an advocacy organization, persuading veterinary associations to lobby against declawing. In 2005, the Paw Project succeeded in persuading the city of West Hollywood to ban the procedure. Since then, the declawing of domestic cats has been outlawed in seven California cities and the declawing of exotic cats has been outlawed in all of California. Additionally, the Paw Project works with veterinary students to persuade them to not offer declawing services within their office practice, thereby eliminating the phenomenon once and for all.
Paw Project (http://www.pawproject.org) has produced a documentary film explicitly showing the effects declawing has on cats. Declawed cats often feel discomfort for the rest of their lives. Many have difficulty walking, they cannot defend themselves, and are disproportionately abandoned to shelters and to the streets because the declawing process affects their behavior, causing them to be erratic, nervous and unsocial.
Animal Support (http://www.animalsupport.org) is dedicated to addressing pet over-population and abuse by promoting charities working on behalf of animal well-being. The organization was founded by brothers Dr. Michael Omidi and Julian Omidi along with long-time friend Maria Abaca to advocate for animal protection, rescue, adoption, and spay and neuter laws. Animal Support does not accept donations but encourages direct contributions of money and talents to the charities and organizations featured on our website.
