BRM Announces New Technical Resource for Selecting Abrasive Disc Brushes; Full-Color Guide Explains How to Choose NamPower Brush Tools for Burr Removal and Surface Finish

Ideal for automated deburring and surface finishing, NamPower brushes are easily integrated into automated machinery, CNC machining centers, transfer lines, and robotic cells.
NamPower technology is also used for applications such as surface preparation, parts resurfacing, and fine blanketing. Made with flexible nylon abrasive filaments bonded to a fiber-reinforced thermoplastic base, these cost-effective brush tools provide consistent results. By allowing lubrication to flow from the brush center instead of from the outside, NamPower industrial brushes also offer longer tool life.
Brush Types and Trim Lengths
As BRM’s downloadable resource explains, NamPower abrasive disc brushes are available in two types: dot and turbine. Dot style brushes are used for general-purpose or light-duty deburring and surface finishing. These brush tools also offer easy entry into small holes and spaces. For medium and heavy-duty deburring, BRM recommends turbine-style NamPower disc brushes with their high-density fill.
In addition to brush type, manufacturers must select a trim length (18-mm or 38-mm) after evaluating application requirements such as burr size, part shape and conformity, radius, and final finish. Abrasive nylon brush tools with longer trim lengths (38-mm) are more flexible but less aggressive. NamPower abrasive disc brushes with shorter trim lengths (18-mm) are more aggressive but less flexible.
Abrasive, Grit, and Brush Diameter
NamPower nylon abrasive disc brushes feature a combination of ceramic and silicon carbide abrasives in four grits: 80, 120, 180, and 320. For best results, consider the starting surface finish and the degree of material refinement that’s required. As a rule, begin with a coarser grit and then use a finer brush tool if necessary. Coarse grits are also recommended for removing heavy burrs.
NamPower abrasive disc brushes are available in three diameters: 100, 125, and 150 mm. Ideally, manufacturers should select and use an abrasive disc brush that’s three inches larger the workpiece. If a smaller brush tool is required because of fixture restrictions, align the centerline of the brush tool with the targeted edge with a 1.5-in. overlap.
