La Peer Surgeon Discusses the Gluten Free Trend on Good Day LA
Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) July 25, 2013 -- Sonu Ahluwalia, MD, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at La Peer Health Systems in Los Angeles, appeared on Good Day LA this Monday, July 22, 2013. In his weekly segment, Dr. Ahluwalia discussed the facts and myths about the gluten free diet, which has been gaining significant popularity across the U.S.
“The problem is that this has become popular,” said Dr. Ahluwalia. “We’ve gone from one end of the pendulum where nobody really knew about it, to now everyone knows about it.”
Dr. Ahluwalia explained the benefits of going gluten free for certain people. The diet is most often used as a treatment for Celiac disease, an autoimmune disease that affects about one percent of the population. Gluten is a protein that is found in things like wheat, barley and rye, used to help food rise and taste better. For people who suffer from Celiac disease, even a small amount of gluten can trigger the autoimmune reaction in the intestine, which leads to absorption problems and the development osteoporosis or vitamin deficiencies.
People who are sensitive to gluten or even wheat can also benefit from a gluten free diet. Symptoms of gluten sensitivity include fatigue, diarrhea, bloating and foggy brain.
But now that the diet has been made popular by various celebrities, many people are going gluten free because it’s the new trend, according to Dr. Ahluwalia.
“The myth is that there are people who go on these diets to lose weight,” said Dr. Ahluwalia. But he explained that people may actually gain weight from being on a gluten free diet, since more processed foods and no whole grains are being consumed.
“Don’t do a fad diet just because celebrities are doing it,” said Dr. Ahluwalia. “The advice is: everything in moderation.”
