WhiteFence.com Releases a List of 12 Moving Tips for Consumers Preparing to Move This Summer
Houston, TX (PRWEB) July 26, 2013 -- Nothing is more exciting – and more stressful – than moving to a new place.
Preparation is the key to any successful move. Start packing as early as possible. Everyone thinks they have more time and less stuff than they actually do, but then they find themselves at the end trying to finish tasks that could have been done much earlier.
Here are WhiteFence.com’s top twelve moving tips to help improve the consumer’s moving experience:
1. Make lists - If the consumer is moving somewhere temporarily before they’re able to move into their future rental or home, they make two lists to manage where the belongings need to go. It’ll help streamline the moving process.
2. Take an inventory - Go room-to-room and write down everything that needs to be packed. If there are large items, like beds, dressers or entertainment centers, write down the measurements.
3. Leave plenty of time to pack - Most people report that moving takes them at least one month to pack, so make sure to allow plenty of time. It can be helpful to set packing goals each day, writing those goals on a calendar so it won’t be overwhelming before your move.
4. Enlist help, but delegate - Having friends and family to help pack can be very helpful, but first everyone must agree on exactly what tasks they’ll be accomplishing and when they will be finished so everything runs smoothly.
5. Research reputable moving companies – When it’s time to hire a moving company, do extensive research and hire a reputable company that is licensed, bonded and insured. Using gut instincts is always beneficial. If the consumer doesn’t feel comfortable with the movers that were hired, they should not let them take their possessions.
6. Packing - When packing, pack a suitcase or bag for each family member as if everyone is going on a weekend vacation. This would include clothing, any medications, toiletries or other personal items that would be needed for a few days away from home. Keep these personal belongings close, such as in the car, so searching through your boxes for your basic necessities is less problematic.
7. Organization - Pack (and unpack) one room at a time. This will make organizing easier for the consumer when it’s time to unpack at their new home.
8. Reduce clutter -Take this opportunity to clean out closets and get rid of unwanted items. Have a yard sale or donate items that are no longer wanted or needed. It will save time and money in the long run.
9. Be creative - Use linens, towels and clothing to pack around fragile items. It’ll save space and money on packing materials.
10. Pack tightly, but not too heavily -Try to keep each box below 50 pounds if possible. It’ll decrease the chances that someone could get injured or that the box could break.
11. When in doubt, take a photo - Use a cell phone to take pictures of how the electronic equipment is hooked up before disconnecting and packing the wiring. It’ll make unpacking and hooking up the equipment much less frustrating at the new place. Cord labels may also be helpful.
12. Don’t forget to let people know you’ve moved - Fill out a change of address form online or at the post office at least 30 days before the move. Let everyone know about the move, including the bank, cell phone provider, doctor, magazine and newspaper subscriptions, children’s schools or child care provider, and any services that are regularly paid for.
