Special Olympics Massachusetts Takes Participants 22-Stories “Over the Edge” at Hyatt Regency’s Downtown Boston Hotel, Raising Over $173,000
Boston, MA (PRWEB) July 30, 2013 -- On July 19-20th, individuals strolling around downtown Boston, may have glanced up to witness the strange site of people scaling 22-stories down the walls of Hyatt Regency Boston. This was part of an unbelievably heart-racing fundraiser for Special Olympics MA (SOMA).
On July 19 and 20, Hyatt Regency Boston, Special Olympics MA and Over the Edge all partnered for the third year in a row to raise money for Special Olympics. Over 130 individuals signed up with the personal goal of raising $1,000 or more. In total, the event has raised over $173,000 thus far, with donations still streaming in. In summation, almost $500,000 has been raised between the 2011, 2012, and 2013 events.
Special Olympics Massachusetts is a leader in providing healthy lifestyles through sports and healthcare-related programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities. SOMA’s mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of well-coached Olympic-type sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics provides these individuals with continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, prepare for entry into school and community programs, express courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Olympics athletes, and the community. With this said, Special Olympics Massachusetts receives very little federal or state funding and is almost entirely dependent on individual and corporate donations to support its programs.
In an effort to contribute to the cause, Hyatt Regency Boston started a Hyatt Helpers team, comprised of six brave associates and managers, including General Manager, Philip Stamm. The Hyatt Helpers team worked tirelessly to receive pledges and proudly earned the #4 fundraising spot, raising over $11,000. “We are going Over the Edge for a great cause,” Mr. Stamm stated, “Our Hyatt Helpers team wanted to support Special Olympics athletes and gain an understanding of the fears and challenges they face daily. If they can make that kind of effort every day, certainly the Hyatt team can go over the edge in support of those athletes.”
