Summer of Learning at Milton Hershey School
Hershey, PA (PRWEB) July 30, 2013 -- While many schools are closed for the summer, students at Milton Hershey School® are continuing to learn through the School’s Year-Round Experience program and through Agricultural and Environmental Education (AEE) internships.
“The goal of our AEE internships is to give students a real-world experience that fosters an appreciation of agriculture and the environment, while teaching leadership, teamwork, and other employment skills,” said Crystal Huff, director of AEE.
The internships include:
· Project Market, which includes running a produce market.
· Environmental Center, which entails raising farmed trout and environmental stewardship lessons.
· Floriculture, which teaches students to design floral creations and run a business.
· Spartan Ice Cream Center, which allows students to make ice cream and run the ice cream stand.
· Animal Center, which makes students responsible for the care of livestock.
· Equine Center, which gives students the opportunity to work with equine animals.
Some of the lessons learned through the experiences include business management, handling money, customer relations, marketing, and being a responsible employee.
When Milton S. and Catherine Hershey established the school in 1909, they envisioned a supportive home and learning environment that would foster the foundations of education, as well as practical training in a useful trade. Today, every graduate has experience in at least one technical program, and 89 percent of the members of the Class of 2013 plan to attend some form of post-secondary education.
