I was happy to pay thousands for a page advert because my core sales spreadsheet showed that the risk of losing money on it was very low. It was almost a sure-fire investment opportunity

Acting too cautiously, and failing to proceed with investment opportunities can actively damage a business, or leave it lagging behind its competitors, Chris Payne has said in a new Find the Edge article.
He uses the post on the business site to recount some personal experiences of how investing in advertising and consulting can provide huge benefits - for a business of any size.
Payne said: "Some people expect something for nothing in their businesses, and there are many business owners that want to succeed, but baulk at paying to promote their business.
"Others realise that success comes from investment in appropriate resources."
He suggests the best option is to look at the bigger picture when approaching large investments. Payne provides an example of a time when he spent heavily on advertising to promote his business.
While others were shocked at the amounts he was shelling out, he left his competition for dead.
He said: "When I started the business, I had some direct competitors. While my ads got bigger, theirs stayed the same size. Perhaps they were stuck in a rut because of a limiting mind-set.
"Eventually they disappeared completely.

Kenny Goodman, founder of Find the Edge, said: "It's understandable to be wary of large investments, especially during recessionary times.
"As Chris points out, however, failing to act can leave a business stagnating, so this article provides plenty of food for thought."
