NCES Portion Plates Provide Hands-On Nutrition Education to Special Needs Adults
(PRWEB) July 31, 2013 -- Portion control is a hot topic in today’s society. Through plates, measuring tools, food scales and other portion control tools, people all over the world are working to minimize their portions and take control of their health. NCES, an industry leader in nutrition education, launched their new line of right-sized portion plates in 2010. Recently, the Adults with Down Syndrome Specialty Clinic through the University of Kansas Medical Center integrated NCES Right-Sized Portion Plates in to their program for teaching nutrition education to special needs students.
Created by NCES dietitians and nutrition educators, NCES Right-Sized Portion Plates will motivate users to make healthier lifestyle choices through portion control and physical activity. Dietitians and nutrition educators can use these plates as teaching tools to educate their patients on making healthy food choices, decreasing portions to healthy sizes and incorporating physical activity in to their lifestyle. Each plate, the Right-Sized Kids Plate and the Right-Sized Adult Plate, is designed to be interactive and easy-to-use and has been researched to follow USDA MyPlate and 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
“I selected this particular plate for a number of reasons. It is bright and colorful, it has pictures of the foods that go in the selected areas rather than just the printed word and it has characters on the borders involved in a variety of activities reminding my patients to exercise and stay active. If am I working with someone that can read, the text is there but if I am working with a patient that cannot read they still get the same message through the pictures.” Says Moya Peterson, Director of KU Med’s Adults with Down Syndrome Specialty Clinic.
Although there are many portion control resources available today, individuals that use NCES Right-Sized Portion Plates for teaching and implementing portion control can be assured of the quality and accuracy of information being delivered. NCES is a recognized leader in nutrition education, portion control and weight management. In Fall 2013, NCES will introduce the new Right-Sized Diabetes plate in to the market. This plate will provide portion control guidelines for individuals living with diabetes and will make a great addition to the NCES Right-Sized Portion line of products.
