Florida Hospital Tampa Presents “Know Your Genes,” an Informative Presentation on the Role Heredity Plays in Disease Prevention and Overall Wellness
(PRWEB) July 31, 2013 -- Florida Hospital Tampa presents “Know Your Genes,” an informative presentation on the role heredity plays in overall wellness, disease prevention and how to minimize risks and the benefit of new 3D mammography, also called tomosynthesis. The seminar, followed by a jeans fashion show, will take place on Wednesday, August 28 starting at 6pm, at Florida Hospital Tampa located at 3100 East Fletcher Avenue, Tampa, FL 33613.
Almost all genes have a genetic base. Some follow straight and clear cut patterns of inheritance; these are known as single-gene disorders and include sickle cell anemia and cystic fibrosis. While others known as multi-factorial disorders, do not follow clear patterns of inheritance and are acquired through a combination of genes and behavioral and lifestyle habits, which can be improved to reduce your risk. “This seminar will create awareness for women about the importance of their genetic history. Knowing more about your family medical history could prove to be lifesaving information,” said Denise Smith, AS, RT Clinical Manager of the Florida Hospital Tampa Breast Care Center.
Florida Hospital Tampa is partnering with Dillard’s at the Shops at Wiregrass in Wesley Chapel for a fashion show, taking place after the presentation. The show will feature the latest styles of jeans for Fall, as well as tips for finding the perfect pair! Local cancer survivors will be modeling the fashions.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to tour the Florida Hospital Tampa Breast Care Center and view the latest in imaging technology, 3D mammography – an extraordinary technology that enables doctors see breast tissue in a way never before possible. This new technology is the most exciting advancement in breast cancer detection in over 30 years. Florida Hospital Tampa will begin offering 3D Mammography breast screening technology to patients beginning September 1, 2013.
Breast tomosynthesis helps radiologists identify and characterize individual breast structures in one millimeter slices without the confusion of overlapping tissue, leading to a clearer image for diagnosis. “We are dedicated to comprehensive breast care. This new technology is a breakthrough in women’s health and makes it easier for doctors to see if there’s anything to be concerned about. It also increases the rate of detection by 30-50% while reducing the need for patient callbacks by 30-40%. The hospital will be using the Selenia® Dimensions® breast tomosynthesis system, which is made by Hologic, a world leader in digital mammography. The Selenia Dimensions system offers exceptionally sharp breast images, and the advanced design enhances patient comfort. The ground-breaking tomosynthesis platform is designed to deliver superior screening and diagnostic performance. That is important since breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women, exceeded only by lung cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.
By offering women the latest technology in mammography, Florida Hospital Tampa hopes to increase the number of women who will be screened, and ultimately save more lives through early detection. Breast cancer screening with tomosynthesis, when combined with a conventional 2D mammograms, has a higher cancer detection rate than conventional 2D mammography alone. 3D mammography also reduces the need for unnecessary callbacks and additional testing since it can more clearly see questionable areas in the breast tissue by capturing multiple slices of the breast, all at different angles.
The Breast Care Center at Florida Hospital Tampa offers a comprehensive breast program including breast cancer prevention, detection, treatment, support and recovery.
