RocketOwl Inc., an Ottawa, ON based social & mobile game developer, increased the user base for GreenSpace, their eco-conscious Facebook game, by over 125,000 new and organic players in two months. The spike was achieved through the addition of exciting new features by their development team and a focused social media push by ReSoMe (Relevant Social Media). By using scheduled content and real-time engagement on multiple social media channels, ReSoMe created an online community for players to interact, voice feedback, and learn how playing GreenSpace can help support green initiatives.

In GreenSpace, players clean and re-build unexplored planets destroyed by trash, while learning about global issues and new technologies. In-game purchases result in real-life change, with proceeds from certain items benefitting reforestation and the Canadian Wildlife Federation. Social media platforms, especially Facebook, provided a community for players to discuss and learn about environmental stewardship, post pictures and updates of their islands, and work together to help other each other in the game.

“We could not be happier about the way the community is coming together,” says RocketOwl Inc. CEO Graeme Barlow, “to think that all of this is able to support local wildlife and reforestation is just incredible.” Barlow also highlights the important role social media played in promoting the game and growing its user base. “In the past we've tried running big ad campaigns and pushing through more traditional channels, but we have never seen great success using these routes.” He adds that a “community-first social media approach” helped build a loyal and engaged fan base, and raise awareness for their social initiatives.
