The BioTechniques 30th Anniversary Lecture Announced as Part of the 2013 BioTechniques Virtual Symposium
New York,NY (PRWEB) July 31, 2013 -- BioTechniques: The International Journal of Life Science Methods will celebrate 30 years of publishing methods and techniques for life science researchers with a special BioTechniques 30th Anniversary Lecture to be held as part of the 2013 BioTechniques Virtual Symposium on Exploring the Modern Lab.
The lecture titled “Novel Drug Delivery Systems: From Controlled Release of Macromolecules to the Current Era of Nanotechnology and Nucleic Acid Delivery” will be delivered by Robert Langer, Sc.D., the David H. Koch Institute Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Over his career, Dr. Langer has been at the forefront of developing new methods for small molecule, drug and gene delivery. This special lecture will focus on various delivery methods and techniques, delivery vehicles and the impact these efforts have had for both basic science and the development of clinical drug delivery systems.

- “Advancing Molecular Biology” (cloning/mutagenesis, analysis of gene regulation)
Feng Zhang, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Neuroscience, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Core Member of the Broad Institute of Harvard University and MIT
Dr. Zhang’s talk will focus on the development of nuclease-based genome engineering tools with an emphasis on the recently reported CRISPR-Cas system.
Hannele Ruohola-Baker, Ph.D., Professor of Biochemistry, University of Washington
Dr. Ruohola-Baker will discuss her lab’s efforts to understand the link between miRNA function, gene regulation and stem cell phenotype.
- “PCR in 2013” (qPCR, multiplex PCR, digital PCR)
Jo Vandesompele, Ph.D., Professor of Functional Genomics and Applied Bioinformatics, Ghent University
Dr. Vandesompele will examine the latest advances in qPCR methodologies and analysis tools.
Larry Wangh, Ph.D., Professor of Biology, Brandeis University
Dr. Wangh’s talk will focus on the development of multiplex PCR applications and the use of LATE-PCR.
Kenneth Kinzler, Ph.D., Professor of Oncology, Johns Hopkins University. Director, Ludwig Center at Johns Hopkins
Dr. Kinzler will detail his lab’s use of digital PCR to better understand the genetics of cancer.
- “Understanding Modern Biochemistry” (protein isolation, protein analysis, protein structure)
Scott Banta, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering, Columbia University
Dr. Banta will detail recent work from his lab involving novel protein purification approaches and new protein engineering strategies, highlighting their possible applications for biological research.
Keith Weninger, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Biophysics, North Carolina State University
Dr. Weninger will describe recent work from his lab using FRET-based approaches to examine protein conformational changes in living cells.
Fang Tian, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Penn State University
Dr. Tian will discuss the recent efforts of his lab to elucidate the structure, function, and dynamics of membrane proteins using NMR spectroscopy.
- “Modern Cellular Imaging” (light microscopy advances, fluorescent probes and proteins, high-content imaging)
Stephen Paddock, Ph.D., Howard Hughes Research Fellow at the University of Wisconsin
Dr. Paddock will address recent advances in confocal imaging applications as well as other developments in light microscopy.
Mark Rizzo, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, University of Maryland
Dr. Rizzo will discuss his lab’s use of a structure-based approach to design brighter and more stable fluorescent proteins as well as FRET-based sensors.
Steven Altschuler, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Endowed Scholar in Biomedical Research, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
Dr. Altschuler will describe his recent development of a new computational tool that enables the rapid profiling of microscopy images from high-content screening applications.
