2013 Hanley Award for Vision and Leadership and $50,000 Prize Go to Dennis Creech of Southface
Washington, DC (PRWEB) July 31, 2013 -- Hanley Wood, LLC and The Hanley Foundation announced today that Dennis Creech, co-founder and executive director of Atlanta-based Southface, has been selected as the fourth recipient of The Hanley Award for Vision and Leadership. The Hanley Award, presented to one recipient each year, is sponsored by The Hanley Foundation, ECOHOME, and BUILDER, and is dedicated to identifying and honoring individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary, lasting, and far-reaching contributions to sustainability, as well as encouraged the housing industry’s response to critical environmental challenges in the United States.
Southface, co-founded in 1978 by Dennis Creech, is one of the nation’s leading education, advocacy and research organizations promoting sustainable homes, workplaces, and communities. For more than 30 years, industry experts and corporations around the globe have sought technical assistance and counsel from Creech and the Southface team of building scientists. Creech spearheaded creation of the annual Greenprints conference and EarthCraft, a certification program developed in partnership with the construction industry to address green building challenges specific to the southeastern United States. Under his leadership, Southface has advised the private sector, from real estate developers to companies like Chick-fil-A, to launch practical, market-based sustainability solutions.
Previous Hanley Award recipients are architect and environmental advocate, Edward Mazria, who founded Architecture 2030, Alex Wilson who founded and leads BuildingGreen LLC, and Sam Rashkin, creator of EnergySTAR for Homes, the first national residential energy rating system in the country.
“Dennis Creech epitomizes the transformational vision and leadership we look for in a Hanley Award recipient each year,” said Michael J. Hanley, President of The Hanley Foundation and creator of the award. “Clearly Dennis has earned universal respect and admiration as a leader of our industry over the past 35 years for his technical research, deep dedication, and passionate advocacy for improving the way we build homes, and I am thrilled to present this year’s award to him.”
Creech was selected from this year’s slate of nominees that included John Abrams (The South Mountain Company), Bob Berkebile (BNIM Architects), Douglas Farr (Farr Associates), Mark LaLiberte (Building Knowledge), Christopher Leinberger (The Brookings Institution), Sarah Susanka (Susanka Studios), and Steven Winter (Steven Winter Associates.)

Hanley, president of The Hanley Foundation and creator of The Hanley Award; Frank Anton, Vice Chairman of Hanley Wood; Sam Rashkin, 2012 Hanley Award recipient and Chief Architect, DOE Building Technologies Program; Eden Brukman, Principal at Concenter Solutions and former VP of the Living Future Institute; and Aurora Sharrard, PhD, VP Innovation, Green Building Alliance.
