The Artist’s New Paint: Ken Jones to Use HMI Lamps for Upcoming Lookbook
New York, NY (PRWEB) July 31, 2013 -- See Ken's fashion photography page here.
Ken Jones, a prolific photographer based in New York City’s own Fultonstudio, has invested in a unique, effective new lighting system. These new lamps will allow the studio to create a glamorous look for his professional shoots, adding new possibilities to the beauty and creativity that Jones’ high-profile clientele have come to love. In addition, the system will give Fultonstudio the ability to shoot video with the same creative lighting setup for stills.
HMI lamps have been used in major productions and shoots for decades. However, these lighting systems can be rather expensive, boasting a $6,000 price tag for just one lamp. In addition, they tend to be very costly to maintain. This is why most still photographers simply rent these systems for specific shoots.
Jones, however, wanted to elevate his work to stand out above the rest. The Fultonstudio is most known for producing works of timeless beauty; thus, it made sense for Jones to make the investment in his studio’s lighting capabilities.
Most still photographers use either studio flash or tungsten-halogen lamps for their shoots. What sets HMI lighting apart is its ability to add a softer, glamorous look to each shot. HMI mimics ambient sunlight, appearing to add a ‘wrap around effect’ that other lighting systems cannot match. Jones mentioned that when shooting with these lamps, the natural lighting takes the guesswork out of determining what ambient color they will produce, saying, “What you see is what you get.” This same lighting can be used for 1940’s-style glamour shots, which makes the system a perfect match for the quality of work that Jones is known for producing.
When asked what he thought about the possibilities of his new lamps, he excitedly replied, “It’s a little magical.”
Jones has already had the opportunity to use these lamps with one client, who was very impressed by the beauty and quality of the shoot. He plans on using his HMI lighting system for this upcoming season’s fashion lookbooks.
Jones described his thoughts on what this new lighting system means to him, “As a professional photographic artist, I am always looking for new mediums to use on my canvas, and light is our paint. Different styles of lighting are our pigments. HMI is a complicated oil paint, that when used correctly, can create wonderful works of art.”
