Dataium, the largest aggregator of in-market automotive shopper behavior, today released its monthly Automotive Shopper Intensity (ASI™) report. The ASI index, a leading predictive indicator of automotive retail sales, increased 2.4% from the previous month.
Dataium predicts the US Retail SAAR in July to be 13.7 million retail units, a 1.5% increase from the previous month.
Across the automotive market, ASI for both compact and sedan segments increased 3% in June, while SUV and truck segments declined 6% and 2% respectively. Rising shopping intensity in the compact and sedan segments was concentrated around the Kia Optima, Volkswagen Jetta, and Hyundai Elantra, thanks to special summer incentives.
The redesigned Chevrolet Silverado benefitted from increased sales in June after an ASI increase observed in May. ASI continued to increase for the Silverado in June, suggesting that the truck will see a second month of strong sales in July. The Silverado is the first domestic vehicle to appear on the ASI Vehicle Top Ten since January.

"Our ASI shows that trucks saw a major increase in April, and the Silverado was a segment leader with a 22% increase in shopping intensity. The Silverado kept moving up in June and July, while others in its segment lost the ground they gained in April. As the economy continued to improve and construction picked up at its best pace in months, the conditions for a new utility truck release couldn't be better now – but we were able to see consumers' interests and planned purchases shift well before even June."
