Femtosecond Cataract Laser -- TRUE Laser Cataract Surgery Has Arrived
Iselin, NJ (PRWEB) August 06, 2013 -- Omni Eye Services is one of the first practices in the region to offer cataract surgery with the Catalys® Precision Laser System. Catalys combines a state-of-the-art femtosecond laser, advanced 3D Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging, sophisticated software and a host of other unique features that enable surgeons to provide patients a gentle, highly customized cataract surgery with unprecedented precision.
“The Femtosecond laser cataract surgery is, in my experience, far superior to traditional manual cataract surgery. The laser created incisions are extremely precise and reproducible. Correction of astigmatism is now possible with precise and predictable laser application. Cataract softening allows the surgeon to use far less ultrasound energy in the eye which is safer for the patient. Following laser assisted surgery there is much less swelling and inflammation than with manual cataract surgery. Overall, Femto assisted cataract surgery is a major advance," said Douglas K. Grayson, M.D., F.A.C.S.
A cataract is a common condition in which the lens of the eye becomes progressively cloudy, making vision fuzzy and normal daily living activities more difficult. Cataract surgery is the only treatment for cataracts and is one of the most widely performed procedures worldwide, estimated at 19 million cases per year.1 If you are experiencing blurry vision, Omni recommends you promptly see your family optometrist to evaluate your entire eye health and to determine if you have cataracts.
Fortunately, cataracts can be successfully treated. In the traditional (non-laser) approach to removing a cataract, the surgeon must perform several critical steps using handheld instruments and a scalpel blade. This manual approach limits predictability and precision, potentially affecting visual outcomes and complication rates. In recent years, femtosecond laser and 3D imaging technology have been incorporated into cataract surgery to enhance the precision, accuracy and customization of the procedure. Using the femto laser to assist in cataract surgery is leading to unprecedented results.2,3
Using femto laser technology, surgeons can access and remove the cataract with accuracy that is approximately 10 times greater than that achieved with manual technique.2,3 This precision and accuracy sets the stage for the proper positioning of the artificial replacement lens. In addition, Femto laser’s sophisticated technology makes break-up and removal of the cataract easier and gentler on the patient.4 A clinical study has shown that the femto laser can nearly or completely eliminate the ultrasound energy traditionally needed during this step. This low-energy approach reduces inflammation, with more rapid recovery expected.4,5
Depending on the patient’s preoperative vision and desired visual result, Omni Eye Services’ doctors, working in conjunction with your family optometrist, may recommend a tailored treatment plan that could include creating ultra-precise laser incisions in the cornea and a specific lens type, such as a multi-focal lens for near and far vision. This tailored treatment may reduce the need for glasses or contacts after surgery.
Laser treatment with a femtosecond laser takes approximately three minutes and causes little or no discomfort to patients.
“It was simple and painless, I was nervous at first, but Dr. Grayson and his staff made me feel comfortable through that whole cataract surgery process. I was able to see clearly right after the surgery,” said Eileen Friel, Westfield, NJ.
