Sales for Residential Power Generators Continue Their Upward Surge

Increase in residential power generator sales may be linked to seasonal and severe weather, as felt by Buckeye Power Sales.

“In our experience, sales growth is definitely influenced by weather events."

Recent reports and sales numbers indicate that business is booming for the residential power generator industry. For Buckeye Power Sales, the company has seen growth in double and triple digits in the past two years.

“We grew 48% in 2011, 110% in 2012 and 50% over the same period in 2012 during our first quarter of fiscal year 2013,” Tom Bohls, Vice President of Buckeye Power Sales, said. “When people think of backup generators, they may think of a plan B power supply for big facilities like hospitals and schools. In actuality, I think the growth in residential power generators show that smaller spaces are finding a lot of use for them.”

While it is estimated that the “prepper” and survivalist community is nearing the four million mark, they are not the only ones investing in residential power generators. Weather plays a big role when it comes to needing backup electricity as super storms have the potential to render cities and regions completely powerless. According to a report published by Congressional Research Service, 1,333 electric grid disruptions occurred from 1992 to 2010. Approximately 78% -- 1,039-- of the outages were storm-related.

“In our experience, sales growth is definitely influenced by weather events. For example, a derecho, a strong wind storm with 100 mph straight line winds, left over a million people without power for days last summer. There was a spike in sales immediately following this event,” Bohls said. “Even if they don’t purchase a home generator, many people learn about backup power during events like this and the sales follow.”
