mPanion Awarded Patent for Mobile Always-On Location And Presence Technology
SEATTLE, Washington (PRWEB) August 05, 2013 -- mPanion®, the mobile location pioneer, announced it has been awarded a patent by USPTO, patent no. 8,489,111, titled “Real-time location and presence using a push-client and server”. The patented technology provides a system for maintaining the location of a mobile device in an always-on, real-time mode while addressing battery constraints using a power-saving mode whenever the device is determined to be stationary. The technology offers performance optimizations for stationary, driving and in-transit modes based on motion detection, speed and “in-vehicle” proximity detection methods.
Patent Award Announcement
"This patent award is recognition of our innovative solutions in the mobile location space," said mPanion Founder and CEO Neeraj Chawla. "We plan to introduce new services to market working with device manufacturers, carriers, and automotive industry, and to build on our always-on location technology which offers significant improvements to battery consumption and network utilization."
Location-awareness is widely recognized as a key enabler of next generation mobile applications and services, and remains a key area of research and development as the industry strives to address the challenges of location accuracy, indoor location, power consumption, driving and transit detection, as well as location privacy.
mPanion’s technology is based on two issued patents and five additional patents pending. “As we continue to develop new location based services, we remain committed to creating and protecting our IP. We look forward to building partnerships with the industry players to bring our technology to the mainstream users,” said Umesh Amin, who is on the Board of Directors of mPanion, Inc.
Patent covers key aspects of always-on location power management technology
The patent covers key aspects of power management technology related to maintaining a location in an always-on, real time mode by managing the power-saving modes of the device such as when the device is determined to be stationary, and detecting motion using accelerometer and other activity detection methods, as well as “in-vehicle” proximity detection methods to detect when the user is driving or in-transit. Furthermore, the patent protects key elements related to maintaining the current location in an indoor environment, when the GPS based location is no longer available.
